Time Duration Calculator

Find how long it is between two times, in hours and minutes, decimal hours and total minutes. Works across midnight.

Enter a start and end time. Use AM/PM (7:00 PM) or 24-hour time (19:00). If the end is earlier than the start, we count it as the next day.

Add or subtract time

Find the clock time a number of hours and minutes after (or before) a start time, such as when an 8-hour shift ends.

Enter a time and how many hours and minutes to add, for example 8 hours from 6:30 AM.

Questions

How do I calculate the time between two times?

Subtract the start time from the end time. If the minutes of the end time are smaller, borrow an hour (60 minutes). For example, 3:15 PM minus 9:40 AM: 15:15 minus 9:40 is 5 hours 35 minutes. The calculator does this instantly.

How do I calculate hours across midnight?

Work out the time from the start to midnight, then add the time from midnight to the end. From 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM is 5 hours to midnight plus 7 hours 30 minutes after, which is 12 hours 30 minutes. If you enter an end time earlier than the start, the calculator assumes it's the next day.

What is 8 hours from 6:30 AM?

8 hours after 6:30 AM is 2:30 PM. Use the add or subtract tool on this page for any time and any number of hours and minutes.

How do I turn a duration into decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 hours. We show decimal hours rounded to two places.

Does this handle daylight saving time?

No. This calculator works on a plain 24-hour clock with no dates, so a span across the night the clocks change will be one hour off: an hour longer than shown in November and an hour shorter in March. Adjust by one hour for those nights.
